UNLOCKING FLUIDITY: HOW UNDERSTANDING BIOMECHANICS TRANSFORMS YOUR RIDING
Discover how biomechanics enhance horse-rider synergy. Grasping rider anatomy for a balanced seat ensures the horse's freedom of movement.

Rider biomechanics is a complex but fascinating field that blends functional anatomy, physics, and the subtle connection between horse and rider. By studying the mechanics of the human body, and more specifically for this clinic: the female skeletal system - we gain insight into how a rider's position and movements impact the horse.
The seat is the most important part of the rider's position. A balanced, supple seat allows the rider to follow the horse's movement and connect with the horse effectively.
For a rider to develop a balanced, supple seat that can connect to the horse's movement, they must first develop an awareness and understanding of their own body. When a rider has poor awareness of their own body or lack flexibility and strength, they are often stiff, tense, and imbalanced in the saddle. Their aids to the horse will be ineffective because their own body is not allowing a clear signal.
Developing body awareness and suppleness starts on the ground through exercises that then translate to improved fluidity and balance when seated on your horse. As the rider gains proprioception of their skeletal structure and improves their flexibility and strength through exercises on the ground, it can have a significant and immediate impact once they are back in the saddle: creating a better biomechanical dynamic between horse and rider.
In summary, an understanding of rider biomechanics leads to improved feel, balance, and communication with the horse. Mastering these principles allows a rider to have a profoundly positive impact on a horse's comfort, movement, and performance.
Theory:
The fundamental differences between the male and female pelvis and how it affects riding and training
Understanding the female skeletal system: how your skeletal alignment and movement will help control and balance your horse
Practice:
Out-of-saddle exercises that increase flexibility - allowing the skeleton to move unobstructed and correctly
One-to-one training while the other riders observe:
o Rider performs a sitting trot so that we can form a baseline for their movement
o Rider is given customized exercises and is given pressure point treatment and massage to assist in releasing tension and freeing up mobility
o Rider returns to the saddle to assess the progression of both horse and rider in their movements and communication through seat
o In and out of saddle exercises continue until there is a notable improvement; and the individualized biomechanics based on conformation is explained for each horse and rider.
